Soul Eunsol Eom: Unflowing Water, Unspreading Fire

Even in moments when everything seems on the verge of collapse, Soul Eunsol Eom's paintings remain remarkably serene. Beneath deep water, figures embrace one another, while before raging flames, they carry on with their daily lives as though nothing has happened. Interior spaces gradually unfold into mountains and seas, and reality and fantasy naturally converge within a single scene. Rather than creating fantastical scenes, Eom's paintings weave an alternative order in which different times and spaces, humanity, and nature coexist within the same world. What matters is not the distinction between reality and fantasy, but the possibility of different beings existing together.

Eom does not view nature as something separate from humanity. Nature is both a space that embraces humanity and an overwhelming force. Water swallows everything, while fire consumes everything. Faced with such immense power, humans experience both longing and fear. This emotional ambivalence takes shape in the paradox of water that does not flow and fire that does not spread: water no longer flows, and fire no longer spreads.
