Yi Seula: Ordinary Days
-
Overview
Kimreeaa Gallery presents the year-end solo exhibition of Yi Seula, Ordinary Days. This exhibition centers on the artist’s recent works, which fluidly traverse the boundary between art and everyday life, capturing the subtle, fleeting moments of our daily routines that often go unnoticed. Yi Seula suggests that beneath familiarity, within even the quietest landscapes and sensations, lie the essential elements that sustain life. Her paintings invite us to pause and observe these minute traces, bringing the peripheral sensations of everyday life into the present. The moments captured on canvas naturally evoke memories of our own days and allow us to rediscover the delicate textures hidden within the repetition of time.
The works presented in this exhibition depict seemingly small yet remarkable moments discovered in daily life—a newly sprouted green leaf, a warmer breeze than yesterday, sunlight streaming through blinds—rendered with the artist’s distinctive sense and warmth. These paintings go beyond simple documentation of the everyday; they draw attention to the small yet precious moments that make each day worth holding onto.
Particularly notable is the series of monthly works, which serve as an accumulation of these sensory records. Over the course of a year, the artist has captured changes in the landscape month by month, allowing viewers to naturally recall their own memories and experiences when standing before each piece. In conjunction with the exhibition, a specially produced calendar extends this series into a visual experience, enabling audiences to perceive the rhythm of the year as a work of art in itself.
Ordinary Days resonates with the temporal nature of year-end reflection. In this final month, her paintings remind us that repeated daily life is composed of countless small miracles. What may appear as a simple sequence of numbers on a calendar is in fact another landscape, formed through accumulated sensations, memories, and experiences. Through this exhibition, viewers are invited to recognize the quiet strength and continuity of “ordinary days,” and to discover how these seemingly mundane moments lay the foundation for looking forward to tomorrow.
