Overview
Lee Doowon is a self-taught artist who has chosen a path of drawing inspiration and materials from his emotions, experiences, and nature encountered while traveling around the world. From an early age, he was deeply influenced by his father, a student of the great Southern School painter Heo Baek-ryeon; his mother, who worked in the fashion industry; and his aunt, a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in France.
Guided by a cosmology that sees nature, animals, and humans as interconnected, Lee creates a whimsical world that transcends traditional forms and boundaries by organically blending the artificial and the natural. His works incorporate natural fibers such as Pakistani wool, Nepali hemp, and Indian khadi cotton, as well as diverse materials sourced from local communities and traditional Korean ink.
In 2023, he held a solo exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London. He was selected as a featured artist for the 2024 Busan Biennale and is scheduled to present a solo booth at The Armory Show in New York in 2025. Actively working both in Korea and abroad, Lee continues to expand his unique artistic language across borders.
